Disclaimer: If your child is unwilling to participate, I will not be able to successfully teach your child how to read.
Additional Details
Each week (for 20 weeks), you will receive the following:
1) 5 printable lessons WEEKLY -
I recommend that you either print our weekly lessons or have a tablet or other device that students can use to physically place their fingers under each letter as we say the phonetic sound and read our words.
I have had many students successfully complete this class without physically printing out the lessons, but it is recommended.
2) 5 Pre-recorded Videos WEEKLY -
These lessons will be taught as if I am in the class with the student.
I will teach the lesson allowing an opportunity for students to repeat the sounds & words back as if they are in a live class, play phonetic games in the beginning lessons, & also demonstrate how to write our letters & words for the day while giving students the opportunity to follow along at home.
(As our lessons grow in size, we will not write the words & letters on the videos, but feel free to continue doing this at home.)
3) Printable comprehension questions WEEKLY -
Once we reach lesson 13, each lesson will include a short story. Students will be asked comprehension questions related to our story. I will ask these questions in the daily class videos. You will receive a weekly printable with these questions to print if desired.
4) Optional Additional Practice Materials WEEKLY -
Optional student reading word cards will be sent as a printable each week starting with lesson 3. These cards are words that we will learn that week from our daily lessons.
A game board will also be sent as a printable weekly to be used with the student reading word cards for additional practice if desired.
5) Interactive if desired -
I encourage all students to share pictures or words for our new letter sounds that we are learning as we learn them.
Students may also share their writings as we write our letters and words. Once we begin to read short stories, I also encourage students to share a short video of themselves reading one of our daily stories, our words, or answering the comprehension questions that go with that story.
These pictures, words, or short videos may be emailed to me weekly if desired. This will give me the opportunity to assess your student’s progress and give individual praise and feedback.
6) Personalized Feedback -
Although this class is flexible and able to be completed at your convenience, it may be as interactive as you would like it to be.
I will respond through a personalized message or personalized video to all pictures, videos, or messages that are sent to me by my students. I am also available to parents for any questions or concerns as well.
The Program
The lessons include a variety of different “tasks” or activities for students to do. In our early lessons, we practice phonetic sounds for our new letters, repeat sounds that we hear, sound out words slowly, and read by saying the words fast.
By lesson 50, students will be practicing sounds and sounding out words, practicing sight words (we call these funny words since we are unable to sound them out), and reading short stories using Distar Orthography.
By lesson 100, students will read a 200+ word short story that is written using standard letters.
The Distar Approach
The Distar Approach - Students will learn to read by sounding out words.
Students will be taught to use their finger to follow along under the words that we are reading.
It is recommended that you print our weekly lessons so students may use these during our classes to physically move their fingers under each letter that makes a sound and under each word.
The Distar Approach
Students will move their finger along the arrow, from dot to dot, saying a letter sound at each dot.
This is a very important step in learning to read in this program. This is a way for students to begin to be able to sound out words on their own.
Your student may also use an iPad or other device to physically place their finger under the letters and sounds if printer access is not available or desired.
